The Flying Nun Building

“The Flying Nun”

This mid-century marvel with its distinctive roof is commonly referred to as “The Flying Nun” because of its resemblance to Sally Field’s habit in the 1960’s television show. 675 tons of lightweight concrete were poured (in one day!) over 37 tons of steel to create the fantastical roof. The front doors feature various 1963 coins embedded between the panes of glass. The building was designed by the Waterbury firm of Alexander & Nichols and officially opened on April 11th 1964.

Originally built as a Waterbury National Bank Branch, quickly it became Citytrust until the 1990’s when it became Chase Bank. The building was last home to the Horgan Academy of Irish Dance. In April 2025, this building is vacant.
