St. Francis Field
Walking along the north end of Church Street, one of the most striking features is the decorative wrought iron fencing that surrounds the Tuttle House property and St. Francis Field. Although it appears to be one fence, if you look closer, it is actually two different fences!
St. Francis Field was originally home to the Lucian & Julia Warner House. Mr. Warner was a contemporary of Mr. Tuttle and was instrumental in starting the Naugatuck Savings Bank and the Naugatuck Electric Light Co.
After Lucian’s death the house was willed to his son, Lewis, and his wife, Lucia. Lewis was also very active in the community and eventually became the Vice President of the Beacon Falls Rubber Shoe Company. He was beloved by residents of both Naugatuck & Beacon Falls and his obituaries laments that the residents of both towns had lost their “Big Brother”
The house was then purchased by Harris Whittemore Jr. and remodeled in the Colonial Revival Style to better match his father’s and grandfather’s houses that sat across the street. It was finally owned by St. Francis Church and known as the “St. Francis White House” before being lost to fire in the 1970’s.
