Board of Directors
Our Treasurer, Joanne Cretella
My journey with the Naugatuck Historical Society began with a simple visit to the Naugatuck History Museum at the Tuttle House. Initially, I had only intended to purchase a postcard for a friend, but upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Theresa Forish, who offered me a tour of the museum. As I explored the exhibits, I was captivated by the depth and richness of Naugatuck’s history. That experience sparked a newfound appreciation for the town’s past and a desire to contribute to preserving and sharing our community’s stories.
For the past two years, I have been an active volunteer, starting with indexing photographs and gradually taking on more responsibilities. I currently serve as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors, co-chair of the Collections Committee, and a member of both the Finance and Exhibits Committees. My work involves managing the organization’s finances, overseeing the acquisition and preservation of historical artifacts, researching and curating exhibits, and helping to expand the museum store’s offerings. Additionally, I take a proactive role in acquisitions, working closely with donors to ensure the thoughtful integration of historically significant items into our collection.
Beyond the Historical Society, I am the Communications Committee co-chair for the Wells Fargo Employee Impact Team for Connecticut, where I develop and share information with employees about organizational initiatives. Professionally, I have worked at Wells Fargo for 27 years, primarily in the Orange/Milford location. I currently serve as a Personal Banker, assisting customers in achieving their financial goals, and previously worked as a Service Manager overseeing operations and staff development.
I have deep roots in Naugatuck, where my family has lived since the late 1890s after immigrating from Ruoti and Atrani, Italy. Growing up here, I developed cherished memories of summers spent at the Cross Street pool, Fourth of July celebrations at the high school, and holiday traditions organized by the Parks and Recreation Department. One of my most meaningful projects at the Historical Society has been uncovering and sharing the story of Shirley Grey, a Naugatuck-born actress who starred in over 45 films during the early 20th century.
Through my involvement with the Naugatuck Historical Society, I am committed to preserving and celebrating the town’s rich history, ensuring that its stories continue to inspire and educate future generations.
